My Favorite Food
Food is more than just nutrients we consume for energy, rather it’s what cheers us up on our sad days, it’s what we use to socialize, and it’s what we use to express ourselves. There are millions of types of foods, but we all have that one specific meal that stands above the rest. It’s a source of joy and happiness that satisfies every ounce of our body and makes us feel whole. We don’t alter this meal in any way because it’s perfect just the way it is and any adjustment would be an injustice. My favorite food and source of happiness is a traditional carne asada taco.
Carne Asada is the centerpiece to this masterpiece; without the meat, these are just plain, old tacos. It needs to be a skirt steak marinated with smoked chipotle peppers, lime juice, onions, cilantro, garlic, orange zest, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika to develop the perfect, savory flavors to star in the taco. You can’t just throw this taco on a grill and call it a day. It must be cooked perfectly in order to reach the perfect tenderness and harness all the flavors within. The carne asada must be cooked on a searing hot cast iron skillet or charcoal barbeque for two minutes on each side, in order to develop the perfect crust with a medium inside. It’s important to let the meat rest for five minutes after cooking so that the meat fibers can rest and reabsorb all the juices. Once the meat has rested, it’s time to chop the meat into small half-inch cubes. Now that you have the perfect carne asada for your taco, it’s time to worry about all the other components of this masterpiece.
Every part of this taco plays a crucial role and surrounding pieces are just as important, if not more important than the carne asada. A white corn tortilla crisped on a plancha or griddle serves as the perfect tortilla to encase all the fillings of the taco. Diced white onions are the most important textural component of taco because without them the taco wouldn’t have a crunchy component. On top of the onions, chopped cilantro serves as the perfect flavor enhancer, as it brings the steak and onions together. The taco still needs a source of acidity, therefore it’s crucial to squeeze a little bit of fresh lime juice on top to cut through the fattiness of the carne asada. The final component is optional, but I highly recommend a few drops of Marie Sharpe’s Habanero Hot Sauce. This hot sauce serves as the perfect condiment and marries all the parts of the taco. There are no words to explain the beauty, simplicity, and taste of this taco. This taco is by far my favorite food in the entire world.

Thanks Ethan now I want tacos. But seriously, your approach to tacos is extremely refined. I can tell that these are not your run-of-the-mill tacos from a stand or fast food joint. I think that your first paragraph is a great introduction to your topic and I'm sure that it could apply to many people, just with their own unique food.

Oh my goodness do I want a taco right now! Your description of the carne asada made my mouth water. I have never made the taco meat before and I never though to include orange zest, but I can see how that would play into the citrus-y flavor that we seek from limes and lemon juice. Thank you for sharing your favorite food!

Ethan!
ReplyDeleteIt's around 6 a.m. in the morning and I just came across this!
AND I WANT A CARNE ASADA RIGHT NOW! I certainly agree with the point on the Habanero hot sauce, it's a delicious add-on!
Btw what is your favorite Taco spot around here? Guisados, Trejo's Taco, and Petite Taqueria are mine. Any new recommendations are always welcome!
best,
Angad Singh
Wow love this. What a topic to pick. Have you ever tried Fuego Maya Habanero hot sauce? It's undoubtedly the best hot sauce on the planet. Give it a go

I love tacos as well and I was immediately hooked by your first paragraph. You made carne asada tacos sound so good and now I want to go get some myself. Your words were very descriptive and I think this blog was extremely well written. By the way, my favorite tacos are fish tacos! :D
ReplyDeleteIt's so funny that you wrote about tacos because I had my first taco this weekend. It was carne asada haha. It was so yummy. I can't believe after living in Miami for nine years I'd never had one. I totally get why it's your favorite food.
ReplyDeleteHey Ethan,
ReplyDeleteIt is so true when you describe how food is more than nutrients, because I believe that nowadays, we don't anymore eat to live but rather live to eat. My favourite dish is a concurrent of yours: the burrito. But tacos are very good too.
I LOVE CARNE ASADAAAAA. It's so good!!! Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoy your writing.

Reading this makes me so hungry! Food definitely makes me happy :)
ReplyDeleteI love your passion for tacos!! I have recently started eating meat again after being vegetarian for 8 years... Carne Asada tacos is next up on my list to try. I'm a wimp when it comes to hot sauce... sriracha is almost too much for me. Your writing style was amazing, made me hungry!

Ethan,
ReplyDeleteI LOVED reading this post because I feel like you were able to interject yourself into the post which is excellent. I felt like after reading this, I now know just a little bit more about you. Your descriptive and vivid words made me sooo hungry, not going to lie, so that was also a treat as well :)
Since you love tacos, what are your thoughts on Trejos? Or do you like any taco trucks around the SC area?

Hey Ethan,
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed reading this as I'm also a huge fan of tacos. You should definitely try Leo's taco truck, by far my favorite al pastor tacos in LA.
